The Galveston Driftwood Festival & Best of the Beach

April 20th, 2013 - May 25th, 2013

The Galveston Artist Residency and Bill Davenport are pleased to announce the first ever Galveston Driftwood Festival and the opening of Best of the Beach, an exhibition celebrating beachcombers, collectors and the unlimited artistic potential of the Gulf.

The Driftwood Festival opens with a sneak preview on Friday, April 19th from 1-3pm, then continues with a full day of workshops, kids activities, fun and food on Saturday, April 20th, leading up to a grand opening during Galveston's Artwalk that evening from 6-9pm.

On Sunday, April 21, "Antiques Roadshow" meets "Car Talk" as a panel of expert beachcombers will be on hand from 1-4pm to be stumped and amazed by unidentified beach finds.

The Schedule of Events includes:

Friday April 19th :
1pm to 3pm - Media and public preview at GAR
2521 Ships Mechanic Row, Galveston TX 77550.

Saturday April 20th :
10am to noon - Adult workshop on driftwood painting.
1pm to 4pm - Children's workshop and crafts.
6pm to 9pm - Opening of Best of the Beach in GAR gallery

Sunday April 21st :
1 to 3pm - Ask the Experts, a team of experts will evaluate different beach finds. It's like Antiques Roadshow for beach detritus!

For The Driftwood Festival and Best of the Beach, the Galveston Artist Residency invited Bill Davenport, renowned Houston-based artist and owner of Bill's Junk to collaborate on a project that would tap into the collector in all of us.

With the help of the Galveston Parks Board's Beach Cleaning squad, GAR has been gathering truckloads of the finest waterlogged and salt-cured wood and it's free for the taking! Festival goers are invited to help themselves: Houston junk-artist Bill Davenport will be on hand all day Saturday with tools and materials to help visitors of all ages transform their finds into miraculous take-home beach art.

In the gallery, a display of Galveston's best ever beach finds puts fossils and artifacts from ages past next to Styrofoam cups and burnt Christmas trees for a survey of the fascinating, freaky gifts from the Gulf that arrive daily on the 78 miles of beach between Surfside and High Island.

A special thank you to ace beachcomber Alex Irvine and juice girl Melissa Dudley for their enthusiasm and help with the exhibition. Best of the Beach will open on Saturday, April 20th, and will close on May 25th.
