About

Galveston Artist Residency’s primary purpose is to give artists an extended period of time to sink inward and focus on the studio with the hope that a break like this can propel them toward an insight that could allow the work to grow in a way impossible without this gift of time.

The need to support creativity for its own sake has never been higher. If we as a species are to have any hope at all of surviving long into the future, it will most likely be because we find new ways of being: new ways of perceiving and shaping our surroundings and consciousness. It is most likely to be the artists and the poets who will first glimpse these new paths.

Through the GAR Gallery and public event programming we hope to engage in a dialogue with the local community and create a place where visitors feel welcome and inspired.

GAR accepts applications for residency grants once a year on an 'open call' basis. Recipients of GAR residency grants are chosen by a panel of art professionals, which changes from year to year.  For more information on applying to GAR, please visit our page on how to apply.

The GAR program is open to visual artists working in any medium. Recipients will be at a point in their career where they will benefit from a period of intense, focused studio time. Emerging artists as well as mature established artists are eligible.
